The 35 minute movement was broken into 15 sections by Mussorgsky, each one based on a painting by artist Victor Hartmann. Each section was individually directed and animated by a team of animators that where made up of current students, alumni, and teachers from USC animation department. The old castle was directed and animated by Ryan Kravetz and Elizabeth Willy. Based on a lost painting of a Italian castle painting by Hartmann , The Old Castle Is a whimsical journey into the past.
